Strauss: Der Rosenkavalier The Italian Singer's first act aria is bleated by John Andrew, a tenor I'd never heard of before. John Modenos's Faninal is acceptable. David Hughes and Anna Reynolds make a fine pair of Italian schemers.
Conductor John Pritchard is a surprisingly good interpreter of this opera, never allowing any longueurs but not 3/5(3). Reynolds's book will reward both scholars and opera-lovers who will are interested in Der Rosenkavalier's co-creators or are fascinated by collaboration and the creative process.

Der Rosenkavalier is one of my favourite operas but I must admit to finding this production a little disappointing. Der Rosenkavalier is a Viennese farce, but like the Mozart comedies that it is styled on, the opera opens up deeper meditations on life, falling in love, forgetting the past, not even thinking about the future.
Creating Der Rosenkavalier is a revised version of Reynold's doctoral thesis, and sometimes it shows. There are repetitions that weren't caught in the editing, for example, and material that is peripheral to the book's main argument that was probably included to satisfy a thesis committee's expectations of scholarly thoroughness. In short, Der Rosenkavalier is like that, a mix of the sublime and the ridiculous, the earnest and the parodic, the trite and the dazzlingly original.
Alan Jefferson's Cambridge Opera Handbook (also from ) is refreshingly upfront about the opera's eclecticism.Der Rosenkavalier (Book): Hofmannsthal, Hugo von. There are no comments for this title yet.
